AMERICAN SON | Drayton Entertainment, 2023
American Son is a play about police violence in the USA; the story unfolds late at night in a police station, after a Black mother discovers her son has been detained.
The show artwork, created by Amanda Kind, features a "red, white, and blue" title on top of a photo of two police cars at nighttime. I took inspiration from this to create additional graphics and videos that would remain in the same visual realm, while being fresh and eye-catching.
PROCESS
Prior to rehearsals beginning, we had no other content to help promote the show. I created a short motion video that used a few evocative lines from the script. The goal? To trigger a sense of stress, while letting the audience know the major themes of the show.
At the dress rehearsal, I captured video footage to cut a trailer.
I also interviewed the show's director to help educate audiences on what to expect.
